Clara

The car was silent.

Brantley nor I had spoken much since leaving his office ten minutes earlier. Lost in my head, basic conversation was beyond me as I worked through the myriad of emotions and thoughts strumming through me.

The most prominent? Relief.

I still couldn’t believe I’d slept with Brantley, but what I found even harder to believe was the lack of fear and panic I felt when my body was bared to his for the first time.

When he touched me, I expected the demons that taunted me, and the heart-wrenching memories I kept tucked away in the back of my mind to rise.

Neither did.

Instead, the only thing I’d felt when his hands and lips caressed my most vulnerable flesh was relief. Not once did I fear his touch. Confident he would only do what I allowed, my mind held steady, my heart strong. With every kiss, with every touch, and with every stroke into my willing body, Brantley had destroyed the soul-gripping fear that plagued me and vanquished the demons that taunted me.

As silly as it may sound, us being intimate resurrected a piece of me, one which I’d been missing for far too long. For the first time in seven years, I felt whole, and it was all because of him, the man I’d promised myself to push away at every turn.

It was a promise I’d broken, but it was also a promise I never should have made.

“You okay?” Brantley asked, taking my hand in his. “You’re being quiet, bella dama.”

I leaned my head back against the seat. “I’m fine. Just thinking.”

“About what?”

“You.”

Brantley hummed, and I knew without having to look that he was smirking. “What about me?”

A smile played on my lips. Self-confidence soaring, I turned my head and peeked over at him. Eyes focused on the road, he didn’t return my stare, but that didn’t stop him from reaching over and taking my hand in his. Fingers intertwined, he caressed my thumb with his own.

“Talk to me, beautiful. I don’t care what it’s about. I just need to hear your voice.”

His words did funny things to my pounding heart. “Do you like the sound of my voice?”

He shot a quick glance my way before nodding. “Yeah, baby, I do. It’s one of the things I missed most when we were apart.” His hold on my hand grew stronger, firmer. “That and your laugh.”

“Then why didn’t you call me?” I whispered.

Another glance. “Would you have answered?”

“I don’t know,” I replied, my brows furrowed. “Probably in case it was Bella.”

Brantley nodded in understanding. “But would you have stayed on once you realized it was me?”

“No,” I replied honestly. “Still wish you would’ve though. Maybe I wouldn’t—” I snapped my mouth shut, afraid to say what danced on the tip of my tongue.

Brantley flicked on his left turn signal before looking over at me again. “Maybe you wouldn’t have what?”

I hesitated. Then, “Been so lonely.”

We turned left into the hospital entrance and followed the yellow signs that directed us towards the visitor parking lot.
