The car was silent.
Brantley nor I had spoken much since leaving his office ten minutes earlier. Lost in my head, basic conversation was beyond me as I worked through the myriad of emotions and thoughts strumming through me.
The most prominent? Relief.
I still couldnât believe Iâd slept with Brantley, but what I found even harder to believe was the lack of fear and panic I felt when my body was bared to his for the first time.
When he touched me, I expected the demons that taunted me, and the heart-wrenching memories I kept tucked away in the back of my mind to rise.
Neither did.
Instead, the only thing Iâd felt when his hands and lips caressed my most vulnerable flesh was relief. Not once did I fear his touch. Confident he would only do what I allowed, my mind held steady, my heart strong. With every kiss, with every touch, and with every stroke into my willing body, Brantley had destroyed the soul-gripping fear that plagued me and vanquished the demons that taunted me.
As silly as it may sound, us being intimate resurrected a piece of me, one which Iâd been missing for far too long. For the first time in seven years, I felt whole, and it was all because of him, the man Iâd promised myself to push away at every turn.
It was a promise Iâd broken, but it was also a promise I never should have made.
âYou okay?â Brantley asked, taking my hand in his. âYouâre being quiet, bella dama.â
I leaned my head back against the seat. âIâm fine. Just thinking.â
âAbout what?â
âYou.â
Brantley hummed, and I knew without having to look that he was smirking. âWhat about me?â
A smile played on my lips. Self-confidence soaring, I turned my head and peeked over at him. Eyes focused on the road, he didnât return my stare, but that didnât stop him from reaching over and taking my hand in his. Fingers intertwined, he caressed my thumb with his own.
âTalk to me, beautiful. I donât care what itâs about. I just need to hear your voice.â
His words did funny things to my pounding heart. âDo you like the sound of my voice?â
He shot a quick glance my way before nodding. âYeah, baby, I do. Itâs one of the things I missed most when we were apart.â His hold on my hand grew stronger, firmer. âThat and your laugh.â
âThen why didnât you call me?â I whispered.
Another glance. âWould you have answered?â
âI donât know,â I replied, my brows furrowed. âProbably in case it was Bella.â
Brantley nodded in understanding. âBut would you have stayed on once you realized it was me?â
âNo,â I replied honestly. âStill wish you wouldâve though. Maybe I wouldnâtââ I snapped my mouth shut, afraid to say what danced on the tip of my tongue.
Brantley flicked on his left turn signal before looking over at me again. âMaybe you wouldnât have what?â
I hesitated. Then, âBeen so lonely.â
We turned left into the hospital entrance and followed the yellow signs that directed us towards the visitor parking lot.
